  What We Do

Post 10523 is rather unique among veteran posts.  Our post does not have a physical presence such as a building or office.  Rather, our post is sited in the hearts of our members and in the camaraderie we share.  The decision by our founding members to take this path was grounded in their belief that this post would mainly focus on aiding veterans in need of assistance and this goal would best be accomplished by not having to concern our membership with the costs, time, and energy associated with maintaining a building and/or canteen.  Thus, our efforts are directed towards assisting veterans and their widows and children by raising funds and participating in various programs and projects which help accomplish our main goals.   We also often honor veterans deserving of special recognition and those individuals and corporations that support all veterans.  We try to always remember that our displays of patriotism, love of our nation, service to our fellow man, and loyalty to our comrades in arms serve as a model for the youth of our community.  Our members are cordially invited and encouraged to participate in all of our activities as their time and abilities allow.

Meetings are generally on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Canal Winchester Community Senior Center which is located at 22 S. Trine St.  Additional parking is available at the rear of the building.  On occasion meeting dates and times will be changed and you will be notified by phone or e-mail should such change become necessary.  All members are encouraged to attend meetings as often as they can to maintain awareness of the operations of the Post and to contribute to the various decisions made at each meeting.  The best way we can improve our Post is by having as much participation by members as possible in all aspects of the Post’s operation.

Read Shanice's Story
Every day as a young child, I walked past my uncle’s silver tags hung up on my kitchen wall. One day, I eagerly yanked the tags off of the wall so I could wear them to school as a necklace. When my mother saw me wearing the tags, she instantly instructed me to put them back. She sat me down and explained to me that these weren’t just any ordinary necklace, but a representation of bravery by someone willing to sacrifice their life for me, and rest of this nation. This trivial childhood experience shaped my current outlook on patriotism today, and since then, I never looked at the necklace the same. To me, these tags do not only represent a person, but sacrifice, determination, and a hero. These tags symbolize the ultimate act of patriotism in my eyes: surrendering one’s life for the love of their homeland. Now, every time I glance at these silver dog tags in my kitchen, I can’t help but feel a sense of respect and gratitude.
